The Continuum of Sleep Breathing Disorders

Snoring – can be the first sign of a developing sleep breathing disorder, which can develop into a mild sleep apnea condition, worsening into a moderate or severe apnea syndrome.

Recent understandings of sleep apnea conditions are linked to a multitude of co-morbidity symptoms including early onset of Dementia and Alzheimer’s, even premature death.

The reduction in normal breathing results in lower oxygen in the blood during sleep. (Known as desaturation) Deprived of oxygen during sleep harms the body and mind, reducing its ability to regenerate and heal from the stresses of the day. Every cell in our body requires oxygen to stay healthy and strong,

If you snore, you should be tested with a Home Sleep Test, a simple device you wear for one night’s sleep period of 6 hrs or more. The test will record the number of apnea events your body experiences during sleep. An apnea event is when your body stops breathing for 10 secs or more. Depending on the number of events/hr and the level of desaturation, treatment may be prescribed.

As you can see from the diagram, apnea events have been shown to be a side effects in cerebral areas like anxiety, depression, brain fog, and stroke; cardiovascular areas like arrhythmia, congestive heart failure, and hypertension; corporal areas like obesity, impotence, Type II diabetes, glaucoma and Parkinson’s.

So, if you snore, you should be screened for the level of sleep apnea you are experiencing, and take a Home Sleep Test to confirm the level of risk you are subject too. Most Health Care Insurance and Medicare provided benefits for these expenses. They recognize the importance of getting a proper diagnosis and treatment.

If you snore, and don’t take these precautions, it could be said that the early onset of dementia is already taking hold of your health!
